Addiction can be defined as â€Å"a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continuation of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary responsibilities and concerns, such as work, relationships, or health† (Addiction). Addiction can be seen everywhere, in every family. We all have that uncle who s a drunk or a cousin who s in and out of rehab. It s something everyone deals with and that everyone s ashamed to admit. In the book, Short Cuts by Raymond Carver there are clear signs of alcoholism in his characters that also reflected on himself. Carver is a very talented writer and his short†¦show more content†¦He gradually got better although there were a few relapses. A couple years later he was back on track and had his life together. However his novels and short stories in the early years of his life cannot be ignored . There was deep seated aggression and hatred he had towards himself and everyone around him that he portrayed in his writings (Raymond). During Carver s life time he was a popular influence with his literature. They touched and connected with the masses, on a deep level. Even though in the book, Short Cuts most of the characters don t end up resolving their issues we can still take meaning out of his text. If a reader knew about his alcoholic background and can be clearly seen throughout the book. In some stories you can see the hints of his characters having drug or alcohol problems which portrays his own addiction. In Vitamins, Patti and her boyfriend went to their jobs where they made money but not rough to where they were happy. Counted among those friends were Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, SylviaBeach, James Joy ce, Max Eastman, Lincoln Steffens and Wyndahm Lewis, and he wasacquainted with the painters Miro and Picasso. The American supports the theme by opposing the girl and saying that thebaby â€Å"is the only thing that bothers† them. He talks of a certain simple â€Å"Operation†in which the doctors will simply â€Å"let the air in.† â€Å"The American† talk of theâ€Å"Operation† further justifies abortion as the theme because the doctors putting theair inside of her, referrs to taking a fetus out of her womb. The man is moreconcerned with the effects of the baby ruining his life more than hers due to the factthat the man says the baby is the only thing that â€Å"bothers , when in actualitythe woman approves of the baby. This also proves the â€Å"Operation† is an abortionbecause the usual case of abortions is: a woman gets pregnant, then the man getsscared, and tells the woman to get an abortion because the baby will ruin both oftheir lives. Next is the character o f the woman who shows contrast, and supports thequalities of â€Å"the girl†. She is called â€Å"the woman† because she is older, and the readeris to assume, wiser, and experienced. The â€Å"girl† talks about â€Å"having a fine time† andâ€Å"trying new drinks† which shows that she is still young, living a life of ease,experiencing a lot of things, where as the woman brings these â€Å"new drinks† to the girl. This displays the woman as mature, older, and experienced because she is workinginstead of â€Å"trying new drinks†, and â€Å"having a fine time.† She is no longer youndleisurely trying new drinks, she is working trying to earn a living. This broad usage of plastic material affirms the universal nature and popularity of it as a building material. Plastic offers a wide variety of expedient goods at relatively low prices. However, the use of plastic is not good for the environment and health purposes. It plays a crucial role to augment the pollution, and because of its adverse effects, it is necessary to control the excessive usage of such harmful material. Many substitutes can be used to miti gate the regular exposure to plastic made objects. Paper, cloth bags, card board and glass are a few alternatives, and can be utilized to conserve the energy and control the pollution level. Plastic can be define d as the polymeric material that Alexander Parkes invented in 1855. Initially named " Parkesine " but later was renamed as celluloid. Till then plastic went through a long journey and eventually, Leo Baekeland's invention of Pheno lics in 1909 brought a not eworthy shift in the usage of plastic .
